Simultaneous Production of Molybdenum-99 and Actinium- 225 using Indonesia Research Reactor (RSG-GAS)

Amatullah A, Takaki N.

Abstract

Abstract Techetium-99m, the decay product of Molybdenum-99, is the most utilized radioisotope for diagnostic purposes. The demand for 99m Tc is more than 80% of all nuclear medicine radioisotopes. In the therapy purposes, Actinium-225 ( 225 Ac), a promising alpha emitter for cancer therapy, faces production shortages. This research aims to investigate the simultaneous production of 99 Mo and 225 Ac using Indonesia’s research reactor (RSG-GAS) with a newly suggested modified low enriched uranium (LEU) electroplating capsule. The result showed that the production of 225 Ra (parents of 225 Ac) is enhanced, reached 7.6 GBq/g- 226 Ra for one cycle irradiation with optimal thickness. After 5 times milking in every 17.5 days, the total production of 225 Ac reached 4.3 GBq.
