PET normalization — the calibration behind every quantitative PET scan
3D PET normalization uses line sources rotated around the scanner FOV to characterise detector sensitivity. Ge-68 line sources deliver stable, reproducible 511 keV reference counts for accurate normalization files.
Older 2D PET systems requiring septa-based normalization use line source rotation. Ge-68 long half-life means one source set survives scanner software upgrades and detector map updates.
Cylindrical phantom imaging for PET uniformity, sensitivity and spatial resolution QA. Documented scanner performance supports AERB inspection compliance and NABH accreditation.
NEMA NU-2 sensitivity and resolution measurements using line sources in specified phantoms. Establishes baseline PET performance for acceptance testing and post-service verification.
Ge-68 point sources verify dose calibrator Ge-68/Ga-68 calibration factor, essential for PET departments dispensing Ga-68 radiopharmaceuticals and needing NIST-traceable dose calibration.
Post-upgrade normalization re-acquisition with the same Ge-68 source provides a consistent reference for before-after comparison, validating the upgrade did not degrade scanner performance.
The source activity is verified at 5mm intervals along the full length before dispatch. Non-uniformity in the line source propagates into the normalization file and degrades PET image quality — ±5% uniformity is the accepted clinical standard.
Ge-68's 271-day half-life allows the same source to be used for 2–3 years with predictable activity correction. Contrast to F-18 or Ga-68 sources that decay in hours — Ge-68 is the only practical choice for routine normalization.
Double-wall stainless steel with argon-welded ends and regular leak test documentation. A sealed Ge-68 source handled correctly in a clinical environment presents no contamination hazard and no wipe test failures at AERB inspection.
