When a Co-57 flood source or Ge-68 line source has decayed beyond useful clinical activity, the radiation-safety officer initiates the return through Saxsons. Saxsons handles the AERB transport paperwork, decay-store coordination and pickup — the source leaves the facility cleanly.
QA-source replacement cycle

Q.What happens to a sealed radioactive source at the end of its useful life?
Sealed sources (Cs-137 blood irradiators, Co-60 teletherapy heads, Cs-137 / Co-57 / Ba-133 dose-calibrator reference sources, Ir-192 brachytherapy sources) cannot be disposed of like unsealed radiopharmaceutical waste — they carry decades of remaining activity and are engineered to be non-leachable. AERB Safety Code and the Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules 2004 require every disused sealed source to be returned to an authorised handler for shielded transport and long-term disposal or repatriation to the original manufacturer. Storing a disused source indefinitely at the hospital is not compliant.
