Applications
Shielding tier matches the radiopharmaceutical class · chassis size matches the per-shift solid-waste volume · hold cycle matches the half-life
Tc-99m SPECT solid-waste hold
Light-shielding tier · compact and standard chassis options. Daily polybag transfer from the SPECT waste bin to the decay drum; 72 h hold takes Tc-99m to ~ 0.025 % residual.
I-131 thyroid-therapy hold
Mid-shielding tier handles the 364 keV gamma over the long I-131 hold (~ 80 days to 0.1 % residual). Standard chassis covers per-shift volume; stainless-steel outer recommended for the long surface-contact period.
FDG / Ga-68 PET hold
PET-tier shielding · F-18 and Ga-68 decay within 18 h and 11 h respectively. The workhorse chassis is the standard PET radiopharmacy choice.
Lu-177 theranostic hold
High-shielding tier — ~ 67-day hold to 0.1 % residual for Lu-177 (T½ = 6.7 days). Highest-shielding tier needed because the hold cycle is long and per-patient activity is high.
High-volume multi-shift hold
High-volume chassis options for radiopharmacies with high per-shift solid-waste volumes. Multi-week hold capacity reduces the frequency of decay-out cycling.
Decay-store room fit-out
Multiple drums in parallel: one per isotope, one per shift cycle. The Saxsons decay drum range covers the per-isotope footprint plan from compact to high-volume.
Why Saxsons™ Lead-Lined Decay Drum?
The standard radiopharmacy hold cycle is 10 half-lives — radioactivity falls to ~ 0.1 % of the dispensed level, below the regulatory clearance threshold for transfer to the standard biomedical-waste chain. Drum capacity is sized so the hold cycle does not pile up and overflow.
The decay drum sits in a dedicated decay-store room, but the operator handles the drum at fill and at empty. Lead tier must match the radiopharmaceutical class so the dose-rate at the operator hand stays inside the AERB envelope at those handling intervals.
Lu-177 theranostic centres and high-volume PET radiopharmacies generate solid waste faster than the half-life can decay it. The high-volume drum gives the multi-week buffer the hold cycle needs without forcing daily drum-swap.

FAQ
Lead-lined decay drum — questions we hear from Indian NM hot-lab teams
Why radioactive waste needs a decay hold before biomedical-waste disposal, how to pick the Pb tier per isotope, how the drum pairs with the departmental waste-bin range, and the AERB chain-of-custody documentation that ships with each drum.
Q.Why can't radioactive hot-lab waste go straight into the standard biomedical-waste stream?
The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules require radioactive waste to sit in decay-hold until the activity drops to background before entering the general biomedical-waste chain. AERB Safety Code for Nuclear Medicine Facility specifies the hold protocol — typically 10 half-lives of the dominant isotope in the drum. For Tc-99m that's 60 hours; for I-131, ~80 days; for Lu-177, ~66 days. Only after the decay hold does the waste leave the department. A dedicated lead-lined decay drum is the engineered control that makes that hold safe for the staff around it.
Q.Which shielding tier fits which department workflow?
The Saxsons decay-drum family covers a Pb-shielding ladder: light tier for SPECT-only departments handling Tc-99m and Ga-67 waste, mid tier for I-131 therapy departments, heavier tier for routine PET (F-18 / Ga-68), and the highest tier for high-activity PET + Lu-177 theranostic waste where the drum needs to shield the staff working around it during the multi-week hold.
Q.How does the decay drum pair with the departmental waste-bin range?
Waste is collected in a Pb-shielded waste-bin at the dispensing bench (matched Pb tier), then the polybag liner transfers directly from the waste-bin to the decay drum for the multi-week hold — minimal manual handling of the activated waste between collection and decay-out. The Saxsons waste-bin range is engineered to nest into the decay-drum liner geometry so the transfer is a lift-and-drop rather than a hand-transfer.
Q.What audit-trail documentation ships with the drum?
Every drum carries an AERB chain-of-custody record: date of fill start, dominant isotope in the drum, calculated decay-out date, dose-rate reading at fill and at release, biomedical-waste transfer seal at release. That record is what the AERB inspection reads to verify the decay-hold protocol was followed for every drum released to the general waste stream.
Q.Is this a distributor-supplied drum or Saxsons-manufactured?
The Saxsons Lead-Lined Decay Drum is a Saxsons own-brand product — designed and manufactured in India by Saxsons Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. under SKU NM-041 in an ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 approved plant. Not a rebadged import; the shielding tiers, chassis sizes, waste-bin compatibility and AERB documentation pack are engineered for the workflows of Indian NM departments.
