High-volume air sampler for radioactive aerosol and radioiodine sampling. Total-Filtration Iodine Air (TFIA) configuration draws sampled air through a 4-inch paper filter for particulates and then through two back-to-back 2-1/2-inch activated charcoal cartridges for I-131 / I-125 capture. The dual-cartridge arrangement gives a built-in collection-efficiency cross-check. Universal AC motor, vacuum-gauge flow monitoring, cast-aluminium filter holder. ANSI N13.1 / ISO 2889 stack-monitoring fit; ANSI N42.18 hot-lab fit; IAEA Safety Reports radioiodine air-sampling fit.

High-volume air sampling — the assay-quality sample that verifies every inline monitor
Periodic high-volume grab samples on the cyclotron exhaust stack to verify continuous stack-monitor (GD-53-based PET-01-class instrument) readings. The TFIA-2 collects an integrated filter + cartridge sample that goes to laboratory gamma assay; the cross-check anchors the inline stack monitor against a separate assay chain.
Continuous air sampling in I-131 therapy room and patient discharge bathroom. The charcoal cartridge captures volatile I-131; periodic cartridge counting tracks airborne radioiodine concentration against the AERB action threshold.
Per-shift integrated air sampling during high-activity radiopharmacy operations (Lu-177 elution, F-18 target offload, Tc-99m generator change). Paper filter captures airborne particulates; cartridge captures any volatile radioiodines.
Post-incident air sampling after a spill, broken vial or unsealed-source event. High-volume draw collects an assay-quality sample quickly; the dual-cartridge cross-check rules out false negatives from low cartridge efficiency.
Up- and down-stream sampling across HEPA filter banks in cyclotron and hot-lab exhaust. Filter-collected particulate activity quantifies HEPA bypass and ageing performance.
Site-boundary air sampling for AERB / state radiation-safety annual reports. Integrated 24-hour samples on the perimeter capture both routine release fingerprint and any incidental airborne activity.
A single charcoal cartridge claims > 99 % radioiodine capture — but if the cartridge is exhausted or channelled, that claim fails silently. Two cartridges in series turn the claim into a measurement: front-cartridge activity ÷ (front + back) gives the per-run collection efficiency. The cross-check is on every sample, not on the calibration certificate alone.
Radioactive aerosols (particulates) and radioiodines (volatile gas / vapour) behave differently and need different collection media. The TFIA configuration puts both in series on a single sampler pass — one site visit, one operator action, two contaminant classes captured separately and assayed separately downstream.
AERB cyclotron-facility inspection and ANSI / ISO stack-monitoring frameworks both expect a high-volume grab-sample capability separate from the inline continuous monitor. The TFIA-2 + assay chain is the standard answer; the cross-check between inline and grab anchors the release record.
