Saxsons PET Tungsten Syringe ShieldTungsten Shielding for F-18 · Ga-68 · Lu-177 · Cu-64 Dispensing
Saxsons own-brand tungsten syringe shield engineered for PET radiopharmaceutical dispensing — F-18, Ga-68, Cu-64 — and Lu-177 theranostic prep. High-density tungsten-alloy shielding reduces finger dose to a fraction of the bare-syringe value; the engraved lead-glass viewing window keeps the dose volume visible while the shielding stays in place. Turn-lock retention on the dispense-line workhorse sizes, thumb-screw on the outlier sizes. Size-coded end caps in Red / Black / Blue make the right shield obvious at glance-speed. Designed and manufactured in India in an ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 approved plant. Sign in to view the complete configuration matrix.
Key Features
- Saxsons own-brand product — designed and manufactured in India by Saxsons Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. in an ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 approved plant
- Tungsten-alloy shielding — high atomic number and high density deliver high attenuation per millimetre of shielding wall, keeping the chassis smaller and lighter
- PET-tier shielding attenuates the annihilation radiation from F-18 and Ga-68 dispensing enough to bring extremity dose per dispense below the AERB / ICRP action threshold
- Engraved lead-glass viewing window on the side — operator reads the calibration scale and visually confirms the dose volume without removing the shield
- Turn-lock retention on the dispense-line workhorse sizes — one twist secures the syringe; no fiddly thumb-screw on the high-throughput dispense line

Applications
Tungsten PET-tier shielding is the design choice between bare-syringe finger dose and the AERB limit
[¹⁸F]FDG unit-dose dispensing
Per-patient FDG dispensing — turn-lock shield sized to the routine unit-dose syringe. Operator reads the calibrated volume through the lead-glass window; dose is assayed against the dose-calibrator without ever exposing fingers to the bare syringe.
Ga-68 PET tracer dispensing
Turn-lock shield for Ga-68-DOTATATE / DOTATOC / PSMA-11 dispensing post-generator elution. The Red / Black / Blue size-coded caps make the right shield obvious at glance-speed against the bench tray.
Lu-177 theranostic dispensing
Higher-volume variants for Lu-177-DOTATATE and PSMA-617 patient-dose dispensing. Tungsten covers the Lu-177 photopeak and the annihilation contribution from Lu-177m in a compact chassis.
Cu-64 investigational dispensing
Investigator-initiated Cu-64 unit-dose dispensing for micro-dose research protocols. Standard PET tungsten attenuation applies across the Cu-64 emission profile.
Multi-size dispensing line
Size-coded caps let the radiopharmacist pick the right shield at glance-speed — Red, Black and Blue map onto the routine syringe sizes on the bench. Prevents wrong-size pick-up during the high-throughput dispensing shift; tray-level organisation by cap colour matches the daily syringe-size mix.
Hot-lab finger-dosimetry programme
TLD ring-badge programme — extremity-dose log records dose per dispense per operator. Tungsten PET-tier shielding is the design choice that keeps the annual extremity dose below the AERB 500 mSv occupational limit at typical PET workloads.
Why Saxsons PET Tungsten Syringe Shield?
The cap colour tells the operator which size shield they're holding before they read the engraving. On a busy PET dispensing line where 30+ doses pass through per shift, glance-speed size identification prevents the wrong-size shield being picked up and dispensed against.
Tungsten's high atomic number and high density mean the shielding wall stays thin while still bringing the primary annihilation flux down to a fraction of the bare-syringe surface. The compact chassis keeps the shield in hand for hours without operator fatigue on the high-throughput PET line.
AERB caps the annual extremity (skin / fingers) dose for radiation workers at 500 mSv. A high-volume PET radiopharmacy dispensing 30+ FDG doses per shift can reach a measurable fraction of that limit with bare-syringe handling; a tungsten PET-tier shield brings the per-dispense extremity dose to a level the annual budget comfortably absorbs.

FAQ
PET syringe shielding, 511 keV extremity dose — questions we hear from Indian PET / theranostics teams
Why 511 keV needs heavier shielding than 140 keV Tc-99m, why tungsten beats thicker lead on the injection ergonomics, how the shield keeps extremity dose under the AERB 500 mSv annual limit, and what the size + colour-cap matrix covers.
Q.Why does PET dispensing (F-18, Ga-68, Lu-177) need a heavier syringe shield than SPECT dispensing?
PET tracers emit 511 keV annihilation photons — the highest photon energy on the routine hot-lab bench. At 511 keV, the same shielding thickness of lead attenuates a fraction of what it does at 140 keV (Tc-99m). A 3 mm lead syringe shield that works comfortably for SPECT Tc-99m provides negligible protection against 511 keV — the technologist's finger dose accumulates fast on a busy PET day. PET dispensing needs either much thicker lead or a denser high-Z material.
Q.Why tungsten instead of thicker lead for 511 keV shielding?
Tungsten is significantly denser than lead, so the same photon-attenuation performance is achieved in a much smaller wall thickness. The Saxsons PET Tungsten Syringe Shield delivers 511 keV attenuation performance equivalent to a much heavier lead shield in a chassis the technologist can still hold and rotate for the injection — a lead equivalent of the same performance would be uncomfortably heavy and bulky for the injection ergonomics.
Q.What extremity-dose problem does this shield actually solve on a busy PET / theranostics day?
ICRP 103 / AERB dose limits set an annual extremity dose of 500 mSv. A radiopharmacist dispensing high-activity F-18, Ga-68 or Lu-177 doses without adequate 511 keV shielding can approach or exceed that limit within one to two years of routine work — extremity dose is the binding constraint on PET / theranostics-heavy departments, not whole-body dose. The tungsten shield keeps the operator finger dose per dispensing well below the limit budget so the technologist can run the PET day without a rotating-shift workaround.
Q.Which syringe sizes and isotopes does the shield family cover?
The family covers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 cc syringes with turn-lock (2, 3, 5 cc) and thumb-screw (1, 10 cc) closures. Colour-coded end caps (blue / red / black) provide per-isotope line separation on the dispensing bench — dedicated shields for F-18, Ga-68, Lu-177 and Cu-64 workflows so no cross-line contamination happens during a multi-tracer session.
Q.Is this a distributor-supplied shield or Saxsons-manufactured?
The PET Tungsten Syringe Shield is a Saxsons own-brand product — designed and manufactured in India by Saxsons Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. under SKU NM-032. The lead-glass side window with engraved calibration scale, colour-coded end caps, size-family matrix and matt-finish tungsten chassis are engineered specifically for the dispensing workflows of Indian PET / theranostics NM departments.
