Saxsons own-brand lead vial shield family — the workhorse pot of the radiopharmacy hot lab. Seven shielding tiers (6 / 8.5 / 9.5 / 10 / 12 / 30 / 40 / 50 mm Pb) cover the whole NM activity spectrum: 6 mm for Tc-99m, 12 mm for I-131, 30 mm for routine PET and 50 mm for high-activity PET / Lu-177 theranostic prep. Six worked dispensing workflows the family covers — pick the tier for the isotope
6 mm Pb tier in SS-202 outer with optional lead-glass viewing window. Daily MDP, MIBI, ECD, MAG3 and DMSA dispensing. Slide-lock closure for fast vial access; the engraved calibration scale lets the operator read the vial volume through the window before withdrawing the dose.
12 mm Pb tier for I-131 (364 keV) capsule decant and bulk oral-solution withdrawal. Steps up from the SPECT tier because I-131 needs ~4 HVL of Pb at 12 mm vs the ~22 HVL the SPECT tier delivers at 140 keV.
30 mm Pb tier with thread + magnetic top cap. Routine FDG dispensing at 511 keV; magnetic closure gives one-touch needle access for the high-throughput PET line. Pairs with the Saxsons Dose Cabinet on the same bench.
50 mm Pb tier for high-activity multi-dose source vials and Lu-177 (DOTATATE / PSMA-617) theranostic dispensing. Same magnetic top-cap closure; ~3.5 HVL extra over the 30 mm tier.
40 mm Pb transport pot with pin-turn lock. Positive locking for tamper-evident transit; MS-painted outer keeps the transport-only build cost lower than the dispensing SS-202 outer.
6 mm Pb + 6 mm Perspex inner layer. The Perspex absorbs the β before it reaches the lead; the lead absorbs the bremsstrahlung-secondary γ. Pairs with the larger 68 cc capacity for high-volume β/γ work.
At 140 keV (Tc-99m), 6 mm of lead is roughly 22 half-value layers — over six orders of magnitude attenuation. Beyond this tier, additional Pb adds chassis weight without meaningful dose-rate benefit; 6 mm is the engineered match between attenuation and ergonomics for routine SPECT dispensing.
At 511 keV (F-18 / Ga-68 annihilation), 30 mm of lead is roughly 7 half-value layers — > 99.2 % attenuation. The 50 mm tier adds ~3.5 HVL more for high-activity multi-dose source-vial dispensing and Lu-177 theranostic work where dose-rate at the operator surface matters more.
A magnetic top cap on the needle hole gives one-touch open / close. On a 30-dispense PET shift, the cumulative cap-cycle time savings are real — but the larger benefit is the operator never has the cap fully off the shield, so the per-dispense exposure stays at the shielded surface even mid-dispense.
